Col d’Orcia’s top Brunello, the Poggio al Vento, is much sought after by winelovers and collectors alike. Perhaps less known but at times almost as good is the estate’s Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, which was made up to and including the 1995 vintage (the estate has since ceased bottling the Riserva in order to avoid running the risk of affecting the quality of the classic Brunello that is made every year).

David Bouley’s Test Kitchen was the setting for this remarkable retrospective featuring Ornellaia and Masseto across eight iconic vintages. All of the wines were served from magnum for what turned out to be a truly unforgettable evening.

Vinous readers have come to know that I collect wines for the love of drinking them, meaning I often indulge in vintages that are less obvious choices than those that are more celebrated, but that produced, in some cases, outstanding wines. And so it is with Tuscany’s 1995 Castello di Ama Merlot L’Apparita, which is delicious and irresistible, even though it was made in a less heralded year.

Gianfranco Soldera remains one of Italy’s most iconic producers. Our recent vertical tasting in London provided an extraordinary opportunity to check in on a number of Soldera Brunellos back to 1981. In particular, I was struck by how well wines from the less renowned vintages showed.

Revisiting the 2005 and 2004 Brunellos is a terrific opportunity to gain further insights on these two very different vintages given that some time has passed since the wines were first released. The best Brunellos from both vintages have plenty to offer, although the finest 2004s are truly superb.
