Cellar Favorite: 1989 Domenico Clerico Barolo Bricotto Bussia

Italy: Piedmont, Cellar Favorites

Antonio Galloni, Jul 2017

Domenico Clerico’s Barolo Bricotto Bussia is absolutely gorgeous tonight. Hauntingly beautiful, with plenty of the tertiary nuances Nebbiolo acquires over time, the 1989 is a pure joy to taste and drink.

Remembering Domenico Clerico

Italy: Piedmont, featured

Antonio Galloni, Jul 2017

Late Sunday evening, as I sat in one of my favorite wine bars in Piedmont, the long-dreaded news that had been in the air for the last few days finally arrived. Domenico Clerico had succumbed to his battle with cancer at 67 years of age. One of the most beloved personalities in Piedmont, Clerico touched many lives during a career that saw him rise from total obscurity to become one of the world’s most admired winemakers.

Northern Rhône: Solid ’14 Reds and Outstanding ’15 Whites

France: Rhône & Beaujolais, featured

Josh Raynolds, Jul 2017

The northern Rhône produced a number of excellent red wines in 2014, although yields are down. Happily, 2015 brought an ideal growing season and harvest, with healthy quantities of clean fruit. My early look at the finished white wines indicates that ’15 is a vintage for the ages.

Vinous Table: Quince, San Francisco, California

United States: California, Vinous Table

Antonio Galloni, Jul 2017

At its best, Chef/Owner Michael Tusk’s cooking artfully blends elements of innovation and tradition in dishes that are inventive and bold, with a touch of the whimsical. This dinner at Quince was full of highlights, even if there were a few rough spots. Regardless, we had a great time.

Rieslingfeier – The 2017 Seminars

Germany, featured

David Schildknecht, Jul 2017

Rieslingfeier is quite literally “a celebration of Riesling.” But the seminars held as part of this year’s event offered tasting and discussion that were thought-provoking – sometimes to the point of head-scratching – and seriously concerned with the future of Riesling on German and Austrian slopes as well as in the North American marketplace.

Vinous Table: Ercoli 1928 Ristorante Parioli, Rome, Italy,

Vinous Table, Italy

Ian D'Agata, Jul 2017

For over 80 years, Ercoli 1928 has been one of the two or three best specialty food shops in Rome - I know some Italian foodies who would rate it the best. The shop, which is located in a central part of Rome, has been recently sold and the new owners have decided to double down and open a restaurant, Ercoli 1928 Ristorante Parioli, that carries the shop’s glorious name.

Selosse – Lieux-Dits Dinner at NoMad

France: Champagne, featured

Antonio Galloni, Jul 2017

Anselme Selosse’s wines are among the most coveted bottles in Champagne. In recent years, Selosse’s lieu-dit Champagnes have ascended into the realm of the nearly unobtainable because of their tiny production. Two of the lieux-dits are sold only as part of the 300 or so boxed sets that are released each year, which makes tasting all six Champagnes together virtually impossible. This unforgettable dinner featured the entire collection of lieux-dits, along with a number of Selosse classics.
